The primary roles of this position are to process incoming reclaimed lumber, prepare materials for resale, fulfill custom orders, and maintain the lumberyard. Hours: 20-30 hours per week. Somewhat flexible, but during retail hours of 8-6 on weekdays

Location: Heritage Timber Lumberyard at 27341 Blixit Creek Rd, Potomac, MT. 

Start Date: As soon as a qualified candidate is available

Duration: Long-term position

Start Pay: $22-26 an hour based on experience. Opportunity for pay increase at three months and yearly evaluation.

Specific duties include:

  • Preparing wood for yarding and custom orders, including measuring, sorting, stickering, stacking, moving, trimming, metal detecting, de-nailing, pressure washing, planing, sanding, and milling.

  • Using a variety of tools, including manual (cat’s paws, hammers, wrenches, etc.), electric and battery (saws, drills, etc.), and fuel powered machines (trucks, sawmills, and forklifts)

  • Providing professional and courteous customer service. Meet with clients and help them choose the best products to match their needs.

  • Performing yard maintenance, including mowing, plowing, weed eating, building, organizing, cleaning and maintaining processing systems.

  • Operating forklifts and telehandler  (We can train if necessary.)

  • Fluently using a tape measure and measurement math, tabulating piles, determining pricing, and using great detail to ensure the accuracy of orders.

  • Handling limited invoices and receiving payments.

  • Performing work safely as outlined by the supervisor.

  • Learning, following, creating, and implementing organizing systems.

  • Performing heavy labor, including prying, pulling, hammering, carrying wood and materials, moving equipment, etc.

  • Maintaining and improving operations through self-initiative.

  • Other duties as needed to run the lumberyard as determined by the supervisor.

Necessary Experience:

  • Previous experience in a similar profession or ability to demonstrate skills needed for the position, including construction, lumberyard, landscaping, etc,

  • Ability to operate a diversity of basic tools including a chop saw, table saw, planer, sander, drill, etc.

  • Has performed physical labor in a variety of conditions.

  • Customer service experience and ability to communicate with clients who have varying levels of knowledge about reclaimed wood.

Helpful Experience (not necessary but a bonus):

  • Knowledge of reclaimed wood and metal, as well as construction and application of materials.

  • Proficient in the use of chainsaws and other tools.

  • Forklift, telehandler, and sawmill operation (will train if you do not know how).

  • Basic math for measuring dimensions, tabulating piles, and determining pricing.

  • First aid certification.

  • Building, welding, mechanic, and other trades to help a yard run smoothly.

  • Has worked in a lumberyard or very active building site.

Qualities must include:

  • A love of physical labor.

  • A desire to preserve materials and make them reusable again.

  • A commitment to performing work safely.

  • A capacity to make clear and logical decisions quickly and without direction.

  • An ability to lift and maneuver loads of 50+ pounds and handle tools for ten-hour days.

  • Coordination to move wood safely, with good balance and focus.

  • Enjoys working independently and is self-motivated.

  • A strong attention to detail, and commitmentment to producing excellent quality work.  

  • Being dependable, showing up on time, working hard, and having a positive attitude.

  • Being able to work hard in any weather, including cold, rain, sun, wind, etc.

  • Precise, organized, and detail-oriented.

  • Ability to handle multi-stage tasks with many variables, asking questions when needed.

  • Good time management and the ability to complete orders promptly.

  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work with clients of varying levels of experience.

  • An ability to work in sometimes dusty and dirty conditions is important (protective gear provided).

  • Capacity to handle repetitive tasks.
